Three points from this (see link). First, the original deal negotiated had conditions and included a continuing US military presence until the Taliban honoured their side of the deal. Biden broke that when he announced withdrawal.
Second, the Taliban, seeing the US were on the way out, did deals with other warlords for their men to assist the Taliban offensive. This greatly boosted Taliban numbers.
Third, as Biden was briefed, the claim that the Afghan army numbered 300,000 was rubbish. The corruption was so widespread that only around one tenth of that figure, 30,000 men, were actually available. Other sources put this figure at between 50,000 and 100,000. Taliban numbers were estimated to be around 85,000. The danger therefore is that the Afghan army was seriously outnumbered.
Other sources have revealed that the ordinary troops were paid very little, if they were paid at all. When they saw NATO forces withdrawing, saw the withdrawal of air support, and were offered a bribe to go home, they took the bribe.
