SUPERMAJORITY COULD HELP LABOUR ‘RIG’ FUTURE POLLS

Quote from the Daily Mail (20 June): ‘Last night Labour insisted it is not planning to give the vote to migrants or prisoners. A spokesman said: “This reeks of desperation and is a lie. Labour will allow 16-and 17-year-olds to vote, and will not extend voting rights beyond that.”’

This is important, as the House of Lords, by convention, does not block those matters contained in a government’s election manifesto. The above quote not only dismisses any allegation of voting rights being extended to all immigrants (those from the Commonwealth already have the vote), but also positively rules out any such extension. This means that any gerrymandering in breach of that commitment can be blocked by the House of Lords, irrespective of the majority vote in the House of Commons.
